Constipation

Constipation is not fun! Here’s some tips on how to handle hard poop !

Newborns
-
It is very normal for newborns to NOT POOP everyday! As long as your baby is feeding well, not vomiting, and making lots of wet diapers, it is more likely that your baby is not constipated. Sometimes a baby can poop only once a week!
- Newborns will also sound like they are grunting or pushing to poop, and it may lead you to think that it is a sign of constipation. In reality, this is called “Infant dyschezia” where your baby still does not know to relax his/her rectal muscles in order to poop. This gets better and easier in time as your baby learns to relax those muscles to make pooping easier for him/her.

When is a newborn constipated? When a baby is pooping very hard solid poops, almost looks like rocks.
- When should you call us? If your baby is pooping hard stools, not eating as much as they usually do, any VOMITING, or showing signs of not making as much wet diapers because they are not drinking enough milk.
